Collaboration across cultures, whether virtual or physical, is essential in many companies and organizations, and culture is present in nearly all aspects of any international collaboration.

It can present challenges, from fundamental cultural biases about what a good leader is to interpretations of micro expressions such as tone of voice, eye contact and body language.

Whether it is the Danish project manager in Dubai struggling with unspoken social rules, the Indian IT-worker in Copenhagen who must navigate the Danish humor or the leader who leads a virtual multicultural team across 8 locations – cultural differences are at play.

CO-Magasinet: Er I inkluderende?

Signe Ørom blev i september 2022 interviewet til CO-Magasinet.

Der blev diskuteret hvordan diversitet såsom køn, kulturel baggrund og religion kan bruges som en fordel og højne innovation og produktion hvis det bruges på den rigtige måde. “Det lyder godt med diversitet, og der er da også et stort potentiale i det, men det kræver mere, end at man bare samler en stor flok med forskellig baggrund, ryster posen og siger: ’Kom så.’ Man skal have det kulturelle med, for uden inklusion kan diversitet faktisk være kontraproduktivt og skabe konflikter og uoverensstemmelser,” udtaler Signe Ørom til CO-magasinet.

“En god og rummelig arbejdsplads kommer ikke af sig selv. Der skal bevidsthed og hårdt arbejde til, for at alle medarbejdere trives som de personer, de er. Til gengæld kan det aflæses direkte på bundlinjen og i trivselsundersøgelsen, hvis virksomheden lykkes med opgaven, siger Signe Ørom, som er kultur-, diversitets- og inklusionsspecialist.”

Based on several years of research and two decades of collaboration with various international companies, ConnectingCultures’ founder Signe Ørom, Ph.D., is ready with the book and seminar “Did You Get the Point? Cultural Intelligence and Diversity in Global Collaboration”. The seminar is aimed for any leader, team or employee looking to develop and strengthen their cultural intelligence, and improve the conditions for successful cross-cultural collaboration in the work-place.

Drawing on the many humorous examples and cases from the book and combining it with her own reflections from her decades-long career, Signe Ørom offers a highly practical and relatable perspective on one the most burning questions for contemporary organizations:

Podcast: kulturel intelligens

En coachende chef bliver betragtet som uvidende. En CEO i cowboybukser chokerer. Og et ja kan betyde hvad som helst. Signe Ørom har medvirket i podcasten Transformator og fortæller om, hvorfor vi danskere er så svære at arbejde sammen med for udlændinge.

Denne episode i podcasten Transformator handler om alle de små kulturelle benspænd, der gør os danskere til en udfordring at samarbejde med for udenlandske medarbejdere. Det har kultureksperten Signe Ørom skrevet en bog om på baggrund af sin forskning samt to årtiers samarbejde med en lang række internationale virksomheder.

Det er så let for chefer og kolleger ganske utilsigtet at komme til at træde ansatte fra andre kulturer over tæerne, selvom vi selv ser os som venlige og hjælpsomme og herligt uformelle. Men en ironisk eller spøgende bemærkning er let at misforstå som alvorligt ment eller direkte uhøflig, og den slags giver Signe Ørom adskillige eksempler på.
